Organization of a football tournament for children in the refugee camp

In Kyaka II Refugee Settlement camp, May 14 was an extraordinary day. More than thirty people, including children but also their parents, gathered for the event of the month...a football tournament! A total of more than 70 refugee children took part in one of the biggest footballing challenges of the camp.

Muke Society team, made up of a dedicated and dynamic team leader, teachers and volunteers, organized this tournament because they are aware of the importance of sport for refugee children. In the camp, the children, especially the boys, spend a lot of time playing football and talking about international leagues and players. That's why the staff decided to organize a big football event to give children aged 9 to 13 the opportunity to show their skills and have a good time.

As soon as they heard about the event, more than 70 children decided to enthusiastically participate in the tournament and the team formed, choosing the name of their team and players from famous international teams. When the game started, many children came to watch and cheer them on; some of them were accompanied by their parents. The children played well, showing their passion and talent for the sport. At the end of a heated confrontation between the two finalist teams, it was the team of Hope (in French "espoir") who won the victory, to the joy of their supporters. The winning team received Muke Society trophy and t-shirts, while the runners-up received medals.

This event was a success and shows the importance that sport plays in general in the lives of children, as it helps to promote inclusive growth for them, but also a way to make new friends. Furthermore, this event was a success for the Muke Society as many children in the audience were surprised by the lively and joyful atmosphere of the child-friendly space, and decided, together with their families, to register, and now participate in the wide variety of recreational and non-formal education activities that take place there daily. Well done to the child protection staff of Muke Society.
